An atmospheric barometer is an instrument used to measure changes in environmental pressure. It can be used to predict the weather or to measure altitude. The principle of a barometer is to represent the weight of an atmospheric column—i.e., atmospheric pressure—by the height of a mercury column or other liquid. The invention of the barometer is attributed to Torricelli and Pascal in the 17th century. Through experiments, they demonstrated the existence of a vacuum and the rule that atmospheric pressure varies with altitude. In general, atmospheric pressure decreases as altitude increases, and it is also affected by temperature and humidity. When atmospheric pressure drops, it usually indicates that the weather will turn cloudy, rainy, or colder. When atmospheric pressure rises, it usually indicates that the weather will turn clear or warmer. A sudden dramatic change in atmospheric pressure near the seaside may be caused by tsunamis, typhoons, or other strong ocean phenomena. Therefore, atmospheric pressure serves as an important indicator for activities such as agriculture, fisheries, aviation, and marine navigation.
